CPR FAQ’s
1. Has the CPR requirement changed?
No. Registrants have always been required to maintain valid CPR-BLS certification without lapse as a condition of practice and renewal.The updated Practice Direction does not change the core requirement. It clarifies and reinforces existing expectations, and has shifted to relying on CPR-BLS certification and re-certification course timeframes:
- Certificates with a stated expiry date remain valid until the identified expiry date; and
- Certificates issued without a stated expiry date will be considered valid for one year from the course completion date.
2. What has Changed with the 30-day grace period?
CDHM previously applied an administrative practice of allowing a 30-day grace period.
Effective immediately, CDHM will no longer apply this 30-day grace period as an administrative practice.
However, CDHM is providing a transition period until the January 2027 renewal cycle to support registrants in adjusting to this change.
Beginning with the January 2027 renewal period, the grace period will no longer be recognized.
3. What does “no lapse in certification” mean?
“No lapse” means your CPR-BLS certification must remain continuously valid at all times.
If your certification expires, even briefly, this is considered a lapse in certification.
4. When do I need to comply with the removal of the grace period?
The removal of the 30-day grace period will be fully applied starting with the January 2027 renewal cycle.
Until that time, CDHM is using a transition period to support registrants in meeting the updated expectation.
5. What CPR certification is accepted?
- Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification is required
- Certification must include in-person, hands-on training and evaluation
- Online-only CPR programs are not accepted
- Certification must meet all requirements outlined in the Practice Direction
6. How is CPR certification reviewed at renewal?
CPR certification is reviewed and verified by the Board of Assessors as part of the renewal process.
Registrants are responsible for ensuring their certification is valid at the time of renewal.
7. What happens if my CPR has expired or lapsed?
Any lapse in CPR-BLS certification identified during the previous renewal period or at the time of renewal may impact the approval of a registrant’s renewal and may result in terms and conditions being placed on registration where appropriate.
8. What if my CPR certification renewal schedule does not align with my employer’s CPR course schedule?
Yes, this may affect you. Registrants complete CPR certification on different schedules, and it is your responsibility to ensure your CPR certification remains valid continuously and does not lapse at any time. If your employer’s CPR course is scheduled after your certification expires, you must make alternate arrangements to renew your certification before the expiry date.
9. Do I need to have my CPR certificate uploaded to my CDHM account at all times?
No. However, it is recommended that you upload your CPR certificate as soon as you receive it to avoid forgetting to do so later. A valid CPR certification, maintained without lapse, is required to be uploaded to your CDHM account for registration renewal. CPR certificates are reviewed and verified during the renewal process to ensure compliance with registration requirements.
10. I live in a rural or northern area of Manitoba and my CPR course was cancelled due to weather, instructor illness, or other unforeseen circumstances. What should I do?
Registrants are responsible for ensuring that their CPR certification remains valid at all times and does not lapse. Registrants in rural or northern areas may need to plan ahead and register for CPR courses well in advance to account for potential cancellations, limited course availability, or other unforeseen circumstances. If a course is cancelled, registrants should make reasonable efforts to secure an alternate course before their certification expires.
11. Where can I find the Practice Direction?

Criminal Record Check (CRC)
- Criminal Record Checks are valid for up to 5 years.
- Criminal Record Checks (CRC) MUST include the Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC).
- There is a 30-day grace period from the expiration date by which a new Criminal Record Check must be uploaded. If more time is needed contact the CDHM office.
- The Criminal Record Check must be completed by the RCMP or local Police Detachment. Third party/online Criminal Record Checks are not acceptable.
- Winnipeg Police Criminal Record Checks can no longer be sent directly to the CDHM. Your Criminal Record Check will be sent directly to you by email or mail.
- To submit your Criminal Record Check, you will upload it by completing a profile update.
- Reminder: when you complete a profile update you must always complete/update the employment section before you submit. If you get an error message after submitting always check the employment section and then resubmit your profile update.
Residents of Winnipeg will be completing their Criminal Record Checks through the Winnipeg Police Criminal Record Check Portal: https://www.policesolutions.ca/checks/services/winnipeg/
