New Applicant Registration with the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba

In order to practice dental hygiene in Manitoba, you must be registered with the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba. Dental hygienists may apply to be registered on the following registers:

  1. Practicing
  2. Non-practicing
  3. Student
  4. Temporary

The CDHM recognizes accredited dental hygiene programs from Canada and the United States. For a list of approved education institutions, please refer to the following websites:

Note: All requirements for registration are set out in The Dental Hygienists Act section 9(1) (a) to (f) and the Dental Hygienists Regulation sections 8 to 12.

If you are not currently Practicing and in Good Standing in another Canadian jurisdiction, please contact the College office, as there may be additional application requirements:

  • Applicants to the Practicing Register who have been away from dental hygiene practice for 3-5 years may be required to complete a 5-day Refresher course.
  • Applicants to the Practicing Register who have been away from dental hygiene practice for a period of 6 -10 years will be required to take a 10-day Refresher course.

Practicing Register-New Applicant from Another Jurisdiction

Applicants to the Practicing register who are currently practicing dental hygiene in another province or territory in Canada must meet the following criteria:

  • A Letter of Good Standing of dental hygiene practice sent directly from your current jurisdiction, and each jurisdiction in which you have been registered during the past five years.
  • A notarized copy of photo identification: A driver’s license or passport can be used as satisfactory proof of identification.
  • Valid Liability Insurance as per section 29 of the Dental Hygienists Act “a member who provides clinical dental hygiene services must obtain or be covered by and maintain liability insurance coverage in an amount of at least 3,000,000.”
  • CPR – Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, taken in the last 12 months from an approved CPR provider. Click to review the CDHM CPR Practice Direction
  • Criminal Record Check, including vulnerable sector check, completed within the last 6 months, from the Manitoba Police or the RCMP. Where you live in Manitoba will determine which police department will complete your application.
  • Completion of the online CDHM Ethics & Jurisprudence Module, Health Equity and Cultural Safety Module, and any other education modules required by Council.
  • Completion of the online Orientation Module and a follow-up meeting with the Registrar or Deputy Registrar. The CDHM will contact the applicant directly to schedule a meeting when the application is complete.
  • Submit payment by Visa or Mastercard.

* A Notary Public is a person authorized to verify the identity of a person signing a document that is required by law. A Commissioner of Oath cannot certify or verify document.

Non-practicing Register-New Applicant from Another Jurisdiction

Applicants to the Non-Practicing register who are currently practicing dental hygiene in another province or territory in Canada must meet the following criteria:

  • A Letter of Good Standing of dental hygiene practice sent directly from your current jurisdiction, and each jurisdiction in which you have been registered during the past five years.
  • A notarized copy of photo identification: A driver’s license or passport can be used as satisfactory proof of identification.
  • Complete the online application.
  • Submit payment by Visa or Mastercard.

Practicing Registration as Out of Province Recent Student Graduate, or Not Currently Registered

Applicants to the Practicing register who are have recently graduated, or are not currently registered in any Canadian jurisdiction, must meet the following criteria:

  • A graduate of an accredited dental hygiene education program approved by the Council. Evidence of dental hygiene education is required. Transcripts are to be sent directly from the educational institution or a notarized diploma/degree can be submitted.
  • Successful completion of the Canadian National Dental Hygiene Certification Board exam (NDHCE) www.ndhcb.ca . A notarized copy, by a Notary Public, of the NDHCB certificate is required.
  • If you have been registered as a dental hygienist in any Canadian jurisdiction in the last 5 years, a Letter of Good Standing of dental hygiene practice is to be sent to CDHM directly from each jurisdiction.
  • A notarized copy of photo identification: A driver’s license or passport can be used as satisfactory proof of identification.

Student Register

University of Manitoba School of Dental Hygiene Student Applicants

Students, who attend the University of Manitoba dental hygiene program, must be registered with the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba. Please note: Students studying dental hygiene in other provinces are not required to register as a student in Manitoba. Once graduated, contact the CDHM office for registration details.

The following is required for student registration:

  • Completed, online student application form.
  • CPR – Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, taken in the last 12 months from an approved CPR provider. Click to review the CDHM CPR Practice Direction
  • Submit payment by Visa or Mastercard

Please Note: as a University of Manitoba student registrant, you are not authorized to practice dental hygiene in Manitoba outside of your educational institution.

Temporary Register

An applicant registered in good standing to practice dental hygiene in a jurisdiction outside Manitoba, may apply for temporary registration. This registration authorizes the applicant to provide clinical dental hygiene services in Manitoba for a specific purpose and for a limited period.
