New Applicant Registration with the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba

In order to practice dental hygiene in Manitoba, you must be registered with the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba. Dental hygienists may apply to be registered on the following registers:

    1. Practicing
    2. Non-practicing
    3. Student
    4. Temporary

The CDHM recognizes accredited dental hygiene programs from Canada and the United States. For a list of approved education institutions, please refer to the following websites:

Note: All requirements for registration are set out in The Dental Hygienists Act section 9(1) (a) to (f) and the Dental Hygienists Regulation sections 8 to 12.

If you are not currently Practicing and in Good Standing in another Canadian jurisdiction, please contact the College office, as there may be additional application requirements:

Applying as a Recent Out of Province Graduate

This section is for applicants who have recently graduated from an institution outside of Manitoba. Applications will be accepted for any graduate from an accredited dental hygiene educational institution/program or have been approved by the FDHRC and have completed the National Dental Hygiene Certification Exam (NDHCE).

Applications will only be considered complete once all documents and requirements have been met.

Applying from Another Jurisdiction/Province

Applicants who are applying to the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba (CDHM) for registration who are currently practicing dental hygiene in another province or territory in Canada must meet the following criteria:

Applying as a U of M Graduate

Once a University of Manitoba Student has graduate from the Dental Hygiene program they may apply for registration with the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba (CDHM).

The application process for U of M graduates is slightly different from those who come from out of province because you already have your own CDHM Account.

Below are the steps for starting your application:

  • Login to your CDHM Account
  • On your home page under the heading Apply – Click the green Apply button in the Practicing (Practicing Graduate) box.

Returning to the Dental Hygiene Profession

Applicants who have been away from the Dental hygiene profession will have different requirements for registration depending on the time away.

Applicants away from the profession less than 3 years:

Any applicant who has been away from the dental Hygiene profession for a period of less than three years and is currently not actively registered with another regulatory body in any Canadian jurisdiction will be required to submit the following as part of their application:

Applicants who have been away for 3 or more years

Any applicants to the Practicing Register who have been away from dental hygiene practice for 3 or more years may/will be required to complete a dental hygiene refresher course.

The duration of the course will be dependent on the time away from the profession.

  • Applicants to the Practicing Register who have been away from dental hygiene practice for 3-5 years may be required to complete a 5-day Refresher course.
  • Applicants to the Practicing Register who have been away from dental hygiene practice for a period of 6 -10 years will be required to take a 10-day Refresher course.

Once you have completed your refresher course, contact the CDHM to submit proof that your refresher course was completed successful and to start the application process.

Applying as a U of M Student

The student register at the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba (CDHM) is reserved for students who attend the University of Manitoba dental hygiene program. Students taking the Dental Hygiene program must be registered with the CDHM as per the Dental Hygienists Act 7(1) and 14(1).

Students studying dental hygiene in other provinces are not required to register as a student in Manitoba.

IMPORTANT: Once you have created your CDHM account, this account will be where you will renew your student registration and where you will be applying for your practicing registration once you have graduated from the dental hygiene program.

Note: as a University of Manitoba student registrant, you are not authorized to practice dental hygiene in Manitoba outside of your educational institution.
